One day the lion king became sick.
He summoned the doctor to treat him.
“Your majesty,” the doctor said,“you will get well if you eat the heart of a donkey, but make sure you take a bath first.”
The lion king was pleased to hear that his illness could be cured.
He then asked his guard, the fox, to find him a donkey.
The fox soon met one, and he wanted to trick the donkey into going to the lion king’s den.
“Donkey, I know a field where there is plenty of fresh, juicy grass,”said the fox.“I can take you there if you like.”
The donkey was so eager to eat such tasty grass that he readily agreed to follow the fox.
The fox led him into the lion king’s den.
As soon as he saw the donkey, the lion king attacked him, but he was too weak to kill him.

The donkey at once escaped from the place.
The fox chased after the donkey.
“Donkey, wait! Why are you running away?
That was the owner of the field and he was only greeting you. You have made him very upset.”
The donkey had never before seen a lion, so he said,“All right, I’ll come with you, Fox.”
And he followed the fox back to the lion’s den.
This time, the lion king attacked the donkey with all his strength and managed to kill him.
He did not eat the donkey’s heart immediately as he wanted to follow his doctor’s advice to take a bath first.
“Fox, guard the dead donkey well,”said the lion king. “I have to take a bath first before eating his heart.”

When the lion king had left for his bath, the fox at once tore out the donkey’s heart and ate it.
“Oh, it’s so delicious!”he murmured.
Then he sat beside the dead animal as if guarding it.
When the lion returned to eat the donkey’s heart, he tore up the body and searched for the heart.
Of course he did not find it.
He was very surprised by this.
He turned to the fox and asked,“Fox, what happened to the donkey’s heart?”
The fox answered,“Your majesty, this donkey did not have a heart.
If he had possessed a heart,he would not have come back after escaping from Your Majesty the first time.”
